A featured snippet is the box of information that appears at the top of Google search results, above the first organic result - often called position zero. Getting a featured snippet can dramatically increase your click-through rate for informational queries. Studies show snippets can increase CTR by 20-30% compared to ranking in position 1 without a snippet.

Types of Featured Snippets

Paragraph snippets: A 40-60 word text block answering a question. Most common for definition and explanation queries ("what is X", "how does X work"). Google pulls the paragraph directly from your page.

List snippets: A bulleted or numbered list. Common for "best X", "steps to X", "types of X" queries. Google may pull from your H3 headings or list items.

Table snippets: A formatted table. Common for comparison and data queries. Structure your HTML tables cleanly with clear headers.

Who Can Win Featured Snippets

You must already rank on page 1 for a query to be considered for the featured snippet. Google selects snippet sources almost exclusively from the top 5 results for that query. If you are on page 2, focus on getting to page 1 before optimizing for snippets. The snippet does not always go to the #1 ranking page - Google picks the result with the best-formatted, most direct answer.

How to Optimize for Featured Snippets

Identify snippet opportunities: Search your target keywords and check which ones already have featured snippets. Target queries where the current snippet is from a lower-authority site than yours, or where the snippet answer is incomplete.

Answer the question directly and early: Put the direct answer in the first paragraph under an H2 that mirrors the question. Keep the answer to 40-60 words. Start with a clear declarative sentence. Do not bury the answer deep in the content.

Use the right format: For step-by-step queries, use numbered lists with clear, short steps. For comparison queries, use tables. For definition queries, use a tight paragraph starting with "X is..." or "X means..."

Use H2/H3 questions: Structure your content with H2 and H3 headings that match common questions around your topic. Google often pulls list snippets by pulling the H3 headings from a section of your page - ensure each heading is a clear, standalone statement.

Should You Always Want a Featured Snippet?

Featured snippets can actually reduce your total clicks for some queries because users get the answer without clicking through. For simple factual queries (dates, definitions, quick numbers), you may get fewer clicks with a snippet than without. For complex queries where your snippet gives enough to intrigue but not enough to fully satisfy, snippets increase CTR significantly. Monitor your CTR in Search Console before and after capturing a snippet to measure the actual impact.
