How to Submit Your Sitemap and Website to Bing
Short answer: sign in to Bing Webmaster Tools (bing.com/webmasters), add your site, then open Sitemaps → Submit sitemaps and paste your full sitemap URL. If your site is already in Google Search Console, the fastest way is to import it: Bing verifies the site and brings your sitemaps over for you. Then set up IndexNow, which Bing recommends for telling it about new and changed pages.
Before you start: get your sitemap URL right
You need the full address of your sitemap, such as https://example.com/sitemap.xml. Many platforms use a different name: WordPress core uses /wp-sitemap.xml, and Yoast and Rank Math use /sitemap_index.xml. If you are not sure, the free sitemap finder looks in robots.txt and the common locations, then tests 30 of the URLs inside it. Fix any errors it finds first. Bing will report the same problems.
Step 1: add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools
Go to bing.com/webmasters and sign in. You have two ways to add a site:
Option A: import from Google Search Console (fastest)
Choose the import option and allow Bing to read your Search Console account. Bing lists your verified sites with their sitemaps. Pick the ones you want and click Import. Bing’s help says imported sites are verified automatically. Bing also checks your Search Console account from time to time and imports any new sitemaps it finds there. You can import up to 100 sites at once.
Option B: add the site by hand
Enter your site URL and prove you own it. Bing offers four ways:
- DNS auto verification, if your DNS provider supports it: sign in to the provider and Bing adds the record for you.
- XML file: download
BingSiteAuth.xmland upload it to your site’s root folder. - Meta tag: paste Bing’s
<meta>tag into the<head>of your home page. - CNAME record: add the code Bing gives you as a DNS record.
Bing says it usually takes about 48 hours before the reports fill with data for a new site.
Step 2: submit your sitemap
- Pick your site in the site list.
- Open Sitemaps in the left menu.
- Click Submit sitemaps (top right).
- Enter the full sitemap URL and submit.
If you use a sitemap index, submit the index. Bing’s sitemap details page lists the child sitemaps inside it. Bing accepts XML sitemaps, RSS 2.0 and Atom feeds, and plain text files with one URL per line.
Also add your sitemap to robots.txt. Bing reads this line too, and so do other search engines:

Step 3: read the sitemap report
The Sitemaps page lists every sitemap Bing knows for your site: the ones you submitted, the ones imported from Search Console, and the ones Bing found by itself. For each one you see the date it was submitted or found, the last processing date, the status, and how many URLs Bing discovered. Click a sitemap to see the exact errors and warnings. Bing’s July 2025 sitemap post says it re-fetches sitemaps at least once a day.
After you fix a problem, use the resubmit button on that sitemap. Bing only lets you resubmit one sitemap at a time.
Keep <lastmod> dates honest. Bing’s webmaster blog (July 2025) calls lastmod a key signal for deciding what to recrawl, for search and for Copilot answers, and asks for full ISO 8601 dates with a time. See our lastmod guide.
Step 4: set up IndexNow for new pages
A sitemap tells Bing what exists. IndexNow tells it what just changed. Bing’s help calls IndexNow “strongly recommended” for new, updated or deleted URLs, and it also notifies other search engines that take part. Many CMS plugins and CDNs can send IndexNow pings for you. Google does not use IndexNow, so keep your Google sitemap too.
Bing still supports manual URL submission in Webmaster Tools and a URL Submission API: up to 10,000 URLs per domain per day, reset at midnight UTC. Bing notes that sending the same URL again and again does not speed up indexing.
