Page Compression & SEO: Why Uncompressed Pages Hurt Your Rankings
Serving uncompressed HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is one of the most avoidable performance mistakes a website can make. Text-based web resources compress by 60–80% with Gzip and even further with Brotli, meaning a 200 KB HTML document becomes roughly 50 KB in transit. Smaller payloads transfer faster, especially on mobile connections, improving Time to First Byte (TTFB) and Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) — both of which feed directly into Google's Core Web Vitals rankings. Enabling compression is typically a single server configuration change with immediate and significant impact.
How HTTP Compression Works
HTTP compression is a negotiation between browser and server. The browser sends an Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate, br header indicating which compression algorithms it supports. The server compresses the response body using one of those algorithms and adds a Content-Encoding: gzip (or br for Brotli) header. The browser decompresses the content before rendering. This entire process is transparent to end users but dramatically reduces bytes over the wire. Gzip vs Brotli: Which Should You Use?

All modern browsers — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge — support Brotli over HTTPS. Enabling Gzip on Apache

Compression at the CDN Layer
If you use a CDN (Cloudflare, Fastly, CloudFront, or similar), compression is often handled at the edge before reaching your origin server. Cloudflare enables Gzip by default and offers Brotli as an opt-in under Speed > Optimization. AWS CloudFront supports both Gzip and Brotli with compression enabled at the behavior level. Edge compression reduces load on your origin server and serves compressed content from the point of presence closest to the user. If your CDN handles compression, ensure you're not double-compressing — origin servers sending pre-compressed content to a CDN that recompresses it causes decompression errors.
How to Verify Compression Is Working
Several methods confirm compression is active. Google PageSpeed Insights flags "Enable text compression" when pages are served uncompressed and shows the potential byte savings. GTmetrix and WebPageTest both report compression status in their waterfall analysis. In Chrome DevTools, open the Network tab, click any HTML or CSS request, and check the Response Headers for Content-Encoding: gzip or Content-Encoding: br. What Not to Compress
Applying compression to already-compressed binary file formats wastes CPU without size savings and can even increase file sizes due to compression header overhead.
