Website Not Showing in Google: 8 Fixes

Start with a website SEO check to rule out technical issues: noindex tags, robots.txt blocks, and sitemap errors are the most common culprits.

1. robots.txt is blocking Googlebot

The most catastrophic cause. Check yoursite.com/robots.txt. If it contains Disallow: / under User-agent: * or User-agent: Googlebot, Googlebot cannot crawl anything. This is commonly left over from development. Remove the Disallow: / rule immediately. Google recrawls robots.txt within 24 hours.

2. noindex tag on key pages

A noindex meta tag tells Google to exclude a page from search results. Check your page source for: meta name=robots content=noindex. In WordPress, check Settings then Reading for a discourage search engines checkbox. In most SEO plugins, check the Advanced or Visibility tab on each page.

3. Site is too new

Brand new domains take 1-4 weeks to appear in Google after publishing. Google needs to discover, crawl, and index your pages. Speed this up: submit your sitemap.xml to Google Search Console, use URL Inspection to request indexing for key pages, and add internal links across your site.

4. Sitemap not submitted

Without a sitemap, Google relies on finding your pages through links. Submit your sitemap at Google Search Console under Indexing, then Sitemaps. Include the full URL: https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml. Google processes submitted sitemaps within days.

5. Page has no internal links

Orphan pages - pages with no internal links pointing to them - may not be discovered by Googlebot even if they exist in your sitemap. Add at least 2-3 internal links from other pages to any page you want indexed.

6. Server is returning errors

If your site returns 5xx errors when Googlebot visits, it backs off and crawls less frequently. Check your server logs or use Google Search Console URL Inspection to see what status code Google gets when it visits your pages. Fix server errors immediately.

7. Google selected a different canonical

If your page has duplicate content issues, Google may index a different version of the page as the canonical. Check URL Inspection in Search Console - it shows which URL Google chose as canonical. If it is different from what you want, add an explicit canonical tag: link rel=canonical href=https://yoursite.com/your-preferred-url.

8. Manual action penalty

Google has applied a manual penalty for a guideline violation. Check Google Search Console under Security and Manual Actions. If there is an active manual action, read the description, fix the underlying issue, and submit a reconsideration request.

9. Crawl budget exhausted on large sites

Sites with thousands of pages sometimes have key content that never gets crawled because Googlebot runs out of crawl budget before reaching it. Symptoms: new pages take weeks to appear in Search Console's Discovered section, and Pages report shows many URLs as Discovered but not crawled. Fix: reduce crawl waste by blocking low-value URLs in robots.txt (faceted navigation, session IDs, internal search), ensure your sitemap contains only high-value pages, and build internal links to important content from well-linked pages like your homepage and category pages.

10. Content quality too low to index

Google crawls a page but decides it is not useful enough to include in the index — it appears in Search Console as Crawled but currently not indexed. This happens with very short pages, pages that largely duplicate other content on your site, pages with auto-generated content, or pages that add minimal value. Fix: substantially expand the content to cover the topic comprehensively, ensure the page adds unique value not available elsewhere on your site or the web, and improve the user experience (load time, mobile rendering, readability).

11. HTTPS certificate errors

If your SSL certificate is expired, misconfigured, or mismatched, Chrome shows a security warning and Googlebot may refuse to crawl the page. Check your site in Chrome and look for any certificate errors in the address bar. Verify your certificate using SSL Labs' SSL Server Test. Common issues: certificate covers www but not non-www (or vice versa), certificate expired, mixed content errors (HTTP resources on an HTTPS page). Fix your certificate and ensure all pages and resources load over HTTPS without mixed content warnings.

12. Thin site with no inbound authority

Brand new sites with no external backlinks can take months to appear for competitive queries even after successful indexing. Google's algorithms give more trust and ranking power to sites that have earned links from other websites. A site with zero backlinks ranking for competitive queries is rare. Fix: focus on earning your first 10-20 backlinks from relevant sites in your niche. Submit to relevant directories, reach out to sites that cover similar topics, and create linkable assets like original data, tools, or comprehensive guides that other publishers will want to reference.
